ICAR-CIRCOT Mumbai Demonstrates Advanced Aerobic Composting to manage Organic Waste

As part of the ongoing Swachhta Hi Seva Campaign 2026, ICAR-CIRCOT, Mumbai, conducted a live demonstration of an advanced aerobic composter at its main campus on September 23, 2026. The initiative aims to drive public participation and raise awareness about home and institutional composting. The newly demonstrated composter accelerates the natural decomposition process, rapidly transforming everyday organic waste into nutrient-dense, high-quality compost.

By returning organic matter to depleted soils, the technology offers a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers—a major contributor to soil degradation and environmental harm. Beyond soil restoration, ICAR-CIRCOT’s model highlights how research and urban institutions can efficiently manage organic waste while generating valuable resources to support urban farming.

Dr. N. Vigneshwaran, Principal Scientist and Head of CBPD, highlighted the vital role composting plays in daily life, residential societies, and institutional campuses. Following the opening remarks, Senior Scientist Dr. Ajinath Dukare led a practical demonstration on aerobic composting using dried leaves, canteen waste, and an enriched microbial inoculum. The interactive session benefited a wide audience across the institute, including researchers, technical and support staff, temporary workers, housekeeping, and security personnel.
